Bluesky Hashtag Generator (Styled Tags & Post Formatting)
Type your post, style the words around your tags, and keep an eye on the 300-grapheme meter. One honest note before you start: tags you want people to actually find should stay in plain text, and this page explains why.

Live SyncHow Hashtags Actually Work on Bluesky
Bluesky turns a # symbol followed by plain letters into a clickable tag. That tag is how people browsing a topic find your post. Styling can make a tag stand out on the page, but styling changes the characters, and changed characters are not the same tag anymore.
Write Your Post
Draft the full post in the editor above, hashtags included, so the grapheme meter counts everything you plan to publish.
Style Selectively
Highlight single words to bold or italicise them. Keep the tags themselves plain if you want them to stay clickable and searchable.
Copy the Whole Post
Copy the finished post in one click and paste it into Bluesky. No reformatting, no lost line breaks, no missing tags.
Styled Tags vs Working Tags
A hashtag works because the app recognises the exact characters after the #. Swap those letters for mathematical bold or script Unicode and the app sees different characters. The tag looks the part and links nowhere. Plenty of people still use styled tags as decoration at the end of a post, which is a perfectly good use, as long as you know it is decoration.
#BlueskyTips (plain, clickable) vs #๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐ฌ๐ค๐ฒ๐๐ข๐ฉ๐ฌ (styled, decorative)The setup that works best for most people: plain tags for the topics you want to be found under, styled words for the hook at the start of the post. You get the discovery and the look, and neither cancels the other out.
Got Questions About Bluesky Hashtags?
Do styled hashtags still work as hashtags on Bluesky?
Not reliably. Bluesky builds the clickable tag from the plain characters after the #. Unicode-styled letters are different characters, so a fully styled tag is decoration rather than a working tag. Keep discovery tags plain.
How many hashtags should a Bluesky post have?
Two to five relevant tags is a sensible range for most posts. Every tag also spends part of your 300-grapheme budget, so a long tail of tags leaves less room for the post itself.
Can I style part of a post and keep the hashtags plain?
Yes. Write the whole post in the editor, highlight only the words you want to format, and apply bold, italic or another style to the selection. The tags stay untouched.
Do hashtags help on Bluesky if there is no central algorithm?
Yes, in a different way. Tags feed topic pages, custom feeds and search, and lots of readers browse through them. A relevant plain tag puts your post in front of those readers.
